2012 proving to be one of Houston's warmest years on record

HOUSTON – While we haven't had the extreme heat that we experienced last summer during our devastating drought, 2012 is still ranking right up there with 2011 as one of the hottest Houston and surrounding areas have ever recorded.

In fact, based on data collected by the National Weather Service, temperature measurements at George Bush Intercontinental Airport through September show that 2012 is tied with 2011 at the top of the list of warmest years.  Galveston, too, is recording its warmest year.  At College Station and Hobby Airport, two other major climate reporting sites in the region, 2012 has been only slightly cooler than last year, putting it at number two on the list in those places.

To many of us, this news may come as a surprise because we didn't have the incredible streak of 100-degree days this summer like we did last summer.  However, last year's extreme heat was offset by more "cool" periods compared to this year.  Therefore, when you average every day out between January and September, this year winds up being very comparable to last year.

The forecast for at least the next week calls for temperatures well above normal, between 88 and 90 degrees each day.  Cold fronts like the one we felt early this week will stay well to our north, so  it looks like October may help to reinforce the trend we've experienced the first three quarters of this year.
