Storms Help Cool Houston Area

Almost 5 Inches Of Rain Falls In Humble

UPDATED: 11:38 am CDT July 7, 2009

Houstonians woke up Tuesday to something they haven't seen in a while -- rain.

"It's much needed," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Anthony Yanez said. "It's going to be off and on throughout the rest of the afternoon. Not as much as we saw this morning, and we saw a good soaking."

The storms moved in from the north and west and made the morning commute a bit longer than normal.

Some areas got more than others. Humble received 4.76 inches of rain, 3.5 inches fell in Tomball, LaPorte received 2.21 inches, 1.58 inches was reported at Houston TranStar and Katy received just .31 inches.

"We didn't see a whole lot off to the southwest," Yanez said.

The storms brought more than rain -- they also brought slightly cooler temperatures.

"If we get the clearing skies, I think our high will be about 92 degrees," Yanez said. "That's if we get the clearing skies, otherwise it's going to be much cooler."

There's a 20 percent chance of rain for the rest of Tuesday.

Yanez said there's a slight chance it could rain again on Wednesday.

"We could wake up with some rain along the coastline and then moving into the Houston area late morning and at about lunch time," he said. "Once we get into the late afternoon hours it really looks like we dry out."

Wednesday has a forecast high of 96 degrees with a 30 percent chance of rain.

Houston has broken several temperature records in the past weeks. June was one of the driest on record.
