Strong Storms Move Into SE Texas

POSTED: Monday, April 27, 2009
UPDATED: 5:32 pm CDT April 27, 2009

Parts of the Houston area could see severe weather Monday evening, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch through midnight and a tornado watch until 9 p.m. for much of southeast Texas.

"It really feels like we haven't gotten a break over the last several days," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Anthony Yanez said. "Almost every day we've had some afternoon booming thunderstorms that have really brought in some heavy rain, anywhere from 6 to 7 inches. That's no different from today."

Yanez said there is some potential for severe storms, including tornadoes.

"We're seeing a lot of twisting," he said. "We have southeasterly winds, we have these storms moving in from the west and also from the southwest. This is all creating some sheer and we could see some very strong thunderstorms develop. I think all of us are in danger of seeing some very strong thunderstorms."

The worst of the storms is expected to hit the Houston area by 10 p.m.

"We could have hail, 80 mph gusts, lightning and heavy rain," KPRC Local 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley said. "Four inches and more is the potential for rainfall with the kind of moisture that is in place. Where exactly that heavy rain will drop is hard to say."

Billingsley said high humidity is "juicing up the atmosphere as the storms move to our area."

There's a 40 percent chance of storms for Monday. There's a chance of rain all week.

"We're going to be warm and humid every day and we have a chance of thunderstorms every day," Yanez said. "It's a small chance, but it's there. It's a typical springtime pattern."
