Tropical Storm Dolly Forms In Caribbean

POSTED: Sunday, July 20, 2008
UPDATED: 7:25 pm CDT July 20, 2008

The year's fourth named tropical system has formed in the Caribbean and could affect Houston's weather in the coming days, KPRC Local 2 reported Sunday.

Tropical Storm Dolly was 125 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of about 45 mph at 7 p.m. It was at 19.3 north and 85.5 west, moving northwest at about 14 mph.

Dolly is expected to move west-northwest during the next few days and decrease in forward speed. It is expected to move across the Yucatan peninsula late Sunday and into the Gulf of Mexico on Monday.

The system is expected to drop 4 to 6 inches of rain across the northern Yucatan and western Cuba. Some spots could see up to 10 inches of rain.

The five-day track predicts the storm will head into northern Mexico on Wednesday, but the forecast cone includes much of southeast Texas.

While Dolly is not expected to pass directly over Houston, the area will likely see some of its effects.

"Sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday we'll start feeling the effects of Dolly, whether it's to the south of us and we just get some moisture, or it's closer to us and we get some of the stronger winds," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Jonathan Novack said. "We're going to keep an eye on this one."
