Houston named one of least expensive U.S. cities for summer travel value

New Orleans ranked most affordable as Houston places second on list

HOUSTON – The most and least expensive cities in the nation and throughout the world for summer travel has been announced by TripAdvisor, based on a cost comparison study.

TripAdvisor said Houston was named one of the most affordable cities in the U.S. for travelers.

The study was conducted by an independent research firm that compared the cost of a three-day summer trip for two travelers in 39 key tourist cities around the world, TripAdvisor said.

TripAdvisor said the top 10 least expensive U.S. cities are:

1. New Orleans,
2. Houston
3. Las Vegas,
4. Atlanta
5. Dallas
6. Miami
7. Washington
8. Philadelphia
9. San Diego
10. Minneapolis

TripAdvisor said the top 10 most expensive U.S. cities are:

1. Orlando, Fla.
2. Honolulu
3. Seattle
4. Boston
5. New York City
6. Los Angeles
7. San Francisco
8. Denver
9. Portland, Ore.
10. Chicago

"According to the TripAdvisor TripIndex, Southern cities offer the least expensive prices for a summer getaway," said Brooke Ferencsik, senior director of communications for TripAdvisor. "A three-day trip to the region costs about $1,250 on average, which is almost $600 less than a three-day trip to the Western cities evaluated in the study. Hotels represent a significant portion of the travel budget and savvy travelers who book their accommodations in one of the least expensive U.S. cities can save 30 percent on average compared to hotel prices with the most expensive U.S. destinations."

Hanoi, Vietnam, is the least expensive international destination, according to the TripAdvisor study. The most expensive international destination is New York City.
