Larry Blackerby was named vice president and general manager of KPRC Local 2 in February 2006. Larry has more than 30 years of broadcast experience. His career is highlighted by innovative and outstanding performance in news development, station operations, and the development of award-winning local programming.
At every station Larry has led, he has made a point to involve his team in the community they serve. At KPRC, Larry has dedicated Local 2 to becoming "Your Education Station," created to give parents, grandparents, and those who make decisions and work in our schools a voice and that it's heard loud and clear.
KPRC has been honored around Houston for its educational coverage by the Harris County Independent School District for the Texas Association of School Boards' Media Honor Roll, the University of Houston Alumni Association and the Houston Association of Retired Teachers. Additionally, Larry brought to Local 2 The Jefferson Awards, which honor outstanding volunteers in our community.
Larry serves on the board of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Greater Houston, the Quality of Life Committee for the Greater Houston Partnership, and the NBC Affiliates Board. KPRC has been awarded for its work by The March of Dimes, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, United Way, and the Red Cross, as well as industry awards.
Prior to joining KPRC, Larry was vice president and general manager of WJXT-TV, Post-Newsweek's station in Jacksonville, Fla., a position he held since September 2003. He also served as vice president and general manager of KMIR-TV, the Emmy award-winning NBC affiliate in Palm Springs, Calif. During his time in Palm Springs, the station expanded its local news programming, and was the first station in the history of the market to win Emmys for local news. In his previous tenure as general manager of WJTV, the CBS affiliate in Jackson, Miss., Larry and his team rebuilt the struggling station and took it to the No. 1 position in the market.
From 1987 to 1995, Larry worked at WGHP-TV, the ABC affiliate in Greensboro, N.C., as vice president of broadcasting. While there, he won an Emmy award for sports programming from the Midsouth Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. His prior experience includes program director at KOLR-TV in Springfield, Mo., and program and operations manager at WBAK-TV in Terre Haute, Ind.
Larry is an Illinois native and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Radio, Television and Film from Indiana State University.
Larry and his wife, Brenda, have been married for more than 30 years and are proud parents to their daughter Hillary.
