Tony Romo to the Texans? Can it happen? Should it happen?

HOUSTON – When an NFL team doesn't have stability at quarterback, the offseason turns into a never-ending rumor carousel.

Hello, Houston Texans, have you met Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo?

The Texans thought they had that position solved last offseason when they presented Brock Osweiler with a $72 million contract.

His subpar play as the Texans starter got him benched late in the season and has the team attached to nearly every possible rumor, unfounded or otherwise, when it comes to available quarterbacks.

Or in the case of Romo, potentially available quarterbacks.

Romo is still under contract with the Cowboys, but clearly would be the backup to Dak Prescott if he remains in Dallas.

The likelihood that Romo would be traded is slim, considering his large contract.

A release is more likely, and that is where the Texans come in.

Reports indicate that Romo believes he can play another two or three years, and the indication is that he wants to play for a team that he believes is a contender.

The Texans have won the AFC South in each of the last two seasons, while going through more starting quarterbacks than any team in the league.

The Texans are going to be into Osweiler for at least $19 million next season, a that figure that could be even higher on their cap, should they choose to release him.

That means that the Texans would be fairly limited in what they can offer Romo on what would likely be an incentive-laden deal.

Romo has also missed a lot of time in the last five seasons with a variety of injuries, including last season when he suffered a compression fracture in his back in the Cowboys' third preseason game.

Injuries are a major concern with Romo. The Texans wouldn't be counting on him to be their quarterback of the long-term future, but their immediate present.

Romo also isn't expected to be released any time soon. If it happens, it more than likely would come after June 1 for salary cap purposes.
