Texans promote Mike Vrabel to defensive coordinator, retain Romeo Crennel

Will move Ryan from WR to QB coach, O'Brien to call plays

HOUSTON – The Texans off season changes are developing quickly following their second round playoff exit.

KPRC Channel 2 Sports has confirmed through sources that Romeo Crennel will be the Texans assistant head coach and linebackers coach Mike Vrabel will become the new defensive coordinator.

Albert Breer on MMQB.SI.com first reported the news Wednesday morning.

Additionally, multiple reports says the team will not hire an offensive coordinator and head coach Bill O'Brien will call plays.

Wide receivers coach Sean Ryan will move to quarterbacks coach.

The team parted ways with offensive coordinator George Godsey on Monday.

Crennel's contract was set to expire with the Texans season ending last weekend in New England.  The Texans defense was ranked number one in 2016 as they gave up the fewest yards in the league, just 301.3 yards per game.

Vrabel joined the Texans staff as linebackers coach in 2014 and has become a popular target in coaching circles as well. Last year he turned down a chance to join San Francisco's staff and chose to remain in Houston.

The Texans have yet to comment publicly on these staff changes.
