Steven Lopez looks to continue family legacy by winning 3rd Olympic gold

HOUSTON – Since 2000, the Lopez name has dominated Olympic taekwondo.

In 2008, the family made history with Jean, Steven's brother and coach, and siblings Mark and Diana all making the U.S. Olympic team. Steven, a two-time gold medalist is just weeks away from his fifth and possibly last Olympic Games.

Earning a medal in Rio would make Steven the most decorated taekwondo athlete of all time.

"When you're on that first-place podium with your hand over your heart, your flag being raised above everyone else's and listening to the national anthem it's something that I want to aspire to feel again. And that's why I'm here so many years later." said Lopez.

As his brother and coach, Jean says Steven is ready.

"Our goal is to win. To represent the United States, to represent Houston, to represent our family," Jean said.

Whether it's his last Olympic Games or not, Steven is going in with a positive mindset.

"One thing that I absolutely know is that I will have no regrets because I've done everything I can possibly do in this sport," he said.
