Simone Manuel wins gold, silver on final night of swimming in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO – Sugar Land's Simone Manuel added more hardware to her Rio Olympics haul Saturday night.

Manuel, who won gold Thursday night in the women's 100M freestyle, took the silver in the women's 50M freestyle.

She finished 0.02 seconds behind Pernille Blume of Denmark.

Later Saturday night, Manuel won another gold medal in the women's 4x100M medley relay final.

After  teammates Kathleen Baker, Lilly King and Dana Vollmer, Manuel swam the last leg, and when she hit the wall her three teammates hugged on the pool deck. Their winning time was 3 minutes, 53.13 seconds.

It was the nation's 1,000th gold medal in Summer Olympics history.

The U.S. is the first nation to win 1,000 summer golds, the first of those coming in 1896. No other nation comes close -- the Soviet Union stopped at 473 golds, and no other country is on pace to reach the milestone until 2100.

The USOC is planning to recognize the 1,000th gold in the coming days, though exact plans on that front remain unclear.

Manuel also won silver in the women's 4x100M freestyle relay, so her total medal count for Rio is two gold and two silvers.
