Retaliation charge dropped against ex-Rockets star Steve Francis

HOUSTON – A retaliation charge against ex-Houston Rockets guard Steve Francis was dropped Thursday.

Francis, 39, was also charged with DWI after his Nov. 19, 2016, arrest.

Prosecutors said Francis refused to take a field sobriety test and made statements that the officer felt were threatening, which resulted in the retaliation charge.

A judge dismissed the charge Thursday, saying it could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Francis was held in jail on a fugitive warrant after his November arrest. The warrant was in connection with an unrelated burglary case in Florida.

A judge granted Francis bond, but ordered him to travel only to Florida to address the case there. He was also ordered to wear an ankle monitor and install a Breathalyzer on his car.

Francis played for the Rockets from 1999 to 2004 and again from 2008 to 2009.

He ranks sixth on the Rockets' all-time assist list. He was also honored as part of the Rockets' team of the 2000s decade.
