America's top female gymnasts compete to head to Rio

Spring's Simone Biles led the U.S. Women's Olympic Team Trials Friday

SPRING, Texas – Despite a bobble on the beam, Spring's Simone Biles led the U.S. Women's Olympic Team Trials by a long shot Friday night.

On her heels were Lauren Hernandez and Aly Raisman.

The competition is only heating up as the 14 women vie for just five spots.

Ask any Olympic veteran and they'll tell you making the top five at the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Trials can be harder than competing against the world.

So one would think Olympic gold medalist Shannon Miller would enjoy looking from the outside in.

"No! Not at all," Miller told KPRC Channel 2. "As a gymnast, you're much more in control of your own destiny, and just watching the competition, I feel like my mother felt watching me. Just the stress and the nerves and the butterflies."

Miller said no question Biles is the standout, followed by Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman. It's the last two spots that are anyone's bet.

"You've got Madison Kocian. You've got Ashton Locklear," Miller said. "So I think we're looking for someone who's doing really good at uneven bars, but also fairly consistent on the other events as well."

Madison Kocian, of Dallas, is hoping to make it two Texans on the women's team. She finished in sixth place after the first night of competition.

"I think consistency is the biggest part for me in just showing that I can still be one of those top five all-around if they need the backup, but just keep doing bar, which is my strongest now," she said.

The women's team will be selected Sunday night.
