2 months to go: NFL, fans get ready for Super Bowl LI in Houston

HOUSTON – Houston is exactly two months out from hosting Super Bowl LI.

As you can imagine, security is at the top of the minds for city and law enforcement officials.

"We feel great about things. We're excited. We're at the two-month mark," Peer O'Reilly, the NFL's senior vice president of events, said.

This week, some top dogs are in Houston to nail down the major details; things like security.

They'll be meeting with the Houston Police Department and federal law enforcement officials.

"The Super Bowl is a national security event, so we will have a 300-foot perimeter around the stadium with magnetometers that will be in place," O'Reilly said.

The last time Houston hosted the Super Bowl was in 2004, and just as the city has since grown, so has the hype leading up to the big game.

For the 10 days prior to Super Bowl Sunday, fans can head to a free festival at Discovery Green.

Then there's opening night at Minute Maid Park.

"To be able to walk and connect with all the fan activities, we don't have that everywhere we go, and I would say this: It is the most compact week of fan experience we've been able to deliver in recent Super Bowl memories," O'Reilly said.

Once we hit 2017, expect to see even more buzz around town.

About 600 NFL employees will eventually be on the ground, and they might even bring some job opportunities for Houstonians.

"This is also the time where a lot of our partners and vendors are hiring, they might be hiring a florist for this hospitality event or making sure this piece of an event is set," O'Reilly said.

And two months out, there are some things we're still waiting to learn.

Who will join the pregame festivities to sing the national anthem and "America the Beautiful"?

And a game-day decision: whether or not the roof at NRG Stadium will be open or closed.
