After Bo Porter was relieved of his managerial duties Monday, Lawless will take over as manager on an interim basis through the remainder of the season.

Bench coach Dave Trembley was also relieved of his duties and former Astros player Adam Everett will replace Trembley as bench coach. The remaining coaches will continue in their current roles.

As to why Astros GM Jeff Luhnow didn't wait until the end of the season, he said Monday it was better for the team and for Porter to get a jumpstart on finding a new candidate and a new job, respectively.

"When you look at the sum win-loss totals the last two years, that's not on Bo, that's on me," Luhnow said.

The search for a new manager will begin immediately, the team said. Luhnow said Lawless would be a candidate if he's interested, but said he couldn't talk about specific candidates at this point.

Recent reports highlighted a rift between Porter and Luhnow.

Porter joined the team in September 2012 and the Astros went 51-111 in the 2013 season.

"The goal is simple: It's to win. That's the goal. Win as soon as possible," Luhnow said.

The Astros need four more wins this month to avoid a fourth consecutive 100-loss season.
