Dynamo to experiment with women's pro soccer league team in Houston

Women's pro soccer franchise coming to Houston

HOUSTON – After weeks of studying numbers and interest the Houston Dynamo have decided to move forward with launching a new franchise in the National Women's Soccer League.

KPRC Local 2 Sports gave you details of the interest in late November.  Dynamo President Chris Canetti then spent a few weeks gauging the interest level from fans and it was enough to convince  the Dynamo to experiment with the NWSL franchise that the Dynamo organization will operate.

The team will formally announce the move at a Thursday afternoon news conference that will be attended by Canetti and Houston Mayor Annise Parker and other city officials.

KPRC Local 2 has learned however, that to break even attendance will need to average between 4,000-5,000 per home game which could prove to be a challenge in a season that will overlap with the Dynamo regular season.

The Houston franchise will begin play later this spring and the season will run through August.
