HOUSTON - ESPN ran their 30 for 30 on Phi Slama Jama last night. I was proud to be a small part of the CHIP RIVES production. I GOT all caught up in remembering how cool those years were. In 1976 I covered Indiana's perfect season.
In late 1979 I TOLD Bob Knight I would be moving to Houston to cover UH HOOPS he said, "don't let them kid you. Guy Lewis knows his stuff". That began a love affair. I FOLLOWED UH Basketball for more years than I CARE to remember, but the 1982-83-84 SEASONS were really special. 3 straight final fours. Phi Slama Jama. I hosted the GUY LEWIS SHOW on ch. 2 for two of the Final 4's. IT WAS MAGIC.
The ESPN show did leave out one of my stories. They left out about 20 stories but I am used to the cutting floor, so it was OK. As part of the production the crew was on the search for BENNY ANDERS. He was a character that CAUGHT OUR IMAGINATION. I told the ESPN crew Benny saved my life. In K.C. the Coogs had just won a regional game and I went to the locker room for post game interviews. Hakeem, then Akeem, had said he wasn't talking to the media.
I said to him, "no problem, just let your play do the talking". He came after me. Something was lost in the translation. Benny and coach Lewis stepped between us. Thus avoiding a name over the locker room at Hofheinz. "The Craig Roberts Memorial locker room" Thanks Benny.
