Daily Craig: Bad month

I usually try to put some fun spin on things or outright make you want to think. The fun stuff won't be in this Daily. This month my friend Jim Pruett was taken. Then I went to a high school reunion only to find out 104 of my classmates had died. Yesterday the word came that Bob Allen had lost a fight with cancer.

Bob and I had our first conversation in May of 1978. I was still in Indy and Bob was there covering A.J. Foyt for Channel 13. Someone said I should talk to him. I did and we hit it off. I am not saying we were tight buddies but we certainly never had an issue. Unless you count griping about general managers or Sports Time being cut by producers who didn't understand how important we sports guys thought we were.

I started to work at Channel 2 in JUNE OF 1980. One of the first calls I got to say congrats was Bob. We were on the same stories together hundreds if not thousands of times. He and I always sat near each other in just about every press box in the country. We tried to beat each other but never beat each other up. When he switched to Channel 11, I told him he was the luckiest guy I knew. He laughed. Then he agreed. Turns out we both were wrong. Bob asked me to be on his Sunday night show and for the first time in almost 40 years we finally worked together. I was told he liked it.  I liked it too.
