Daily Craig: Remember the games

After a drive home from the Alabama coast I tuned in to watch some of the Olympic Trials on Channel 2. Swimmers, take your marks. It is interesting to me to see how the swim wear changes from years past. The three quarter length tights are the rage this Olympic year. Some of the guys still shave their heads but swim caps still dominate. THE WOMEN seem to be wearing much the same as they did 4 years ago. Swimming is tough and it never lets you see who's sweating. They are always wet. Last night Dan Hicks of NBC did the play by play with 1984 Gold Medalist, Rowdy Gaines. Hicks’ wife, HANNAH STORM, of ESPN, once interned with us at Channel 2.  I went on her first story at The Dad's Club Y in Spring Branch. She interviewed Rowdy Gaines who was there in training.

Atlanta was when Carl Lewis won his last Gold and he let me hold it while we did an interview. Those games in 1994 turned ugly when a bomb went off very late one night in the middle of the games. Channel 2 PHOTOG James Perry and I WERE ABOUT to have a very late dinner when it happened close to where we were. An Air Force military policeman told us we couldn't get to the bomb site. He called me by name. The police were from Ellington Field. The first doctor on the scene was Jack Jensen of Houston. I DID a live interview with him about 2 a.m. The next day he was interviewed worldwide.

I can also say my memory is solid when it came to boxing. I ring announced 120 bouts in 4 days during the OLYMPIC BOXING TRIALS in 2008. It was held at the GRB. We had the worst U.S. team in history. I guess they didn't want that ring announcer again.
