Daily Craig: He's in the basement

I posted about the Bears Thursday. They come to Houston for week one on Sunday. Their cousins, the Cubs, are here for the first of three starting Friday. The Cubs haven't been this many games over .500 since the summer of 1945. The ALLIES were also way over .500. In fact, GERMANY had been eliminated and the Japanese were down for the count too.

My family had always been Cubs fans. Every last one of them except for my kids. ONE LIKES THE ASTROS and ONE LIKES THE BRAVES. However, you can't argue with baseball fans, as they are too good at it.

In 1972 I WAS working in Casper, Wyoming at Channel 2. It was KTWO and billed itself as the "largest news organization in Wyoming". We had five guys and the station in Cheyenne only had four.

I worked for a guy who had some stock in the Cubs. He was the only non-Wrigley with that clout. He sent me to Chicago to do some interviews and I ended up in the WGN TV booth with JACK BRICKHOUSE. I was shocked when he told me to put on the headphones. He then asked me some questions about the team and my family in Illinois. I told him they were all rooting for the CUBBIES including my uncle Max in Oswego,Illinois. Max got two calls from bankers after they heard his name on TV. I TOLD JACK my grandpa used to brood in the basement when the Cubs lost.

Jack then closed out our little bit by saying "Thanks to Craig for stopping by and let us know if anyone sees his grandpa. He's been in the basement since 1945".
