The junior will enter the 2013 Big East season as the conference's top returning rusher with an average of 95 yards per game despite missing three full games and the second half of three other games with injuries. Sims also led all 2013 Big East players with 136 all-purpose yards per game in 2012.

"The NFL is my ultimate goal and will still be my goal when I finish at Houston. My family and I sat down and carefully evaluated all aspects of the decision and in the end the opportunity for one more year at Houston was the decision we felt strongly about," said Sims, who is scheduled to graduate in the spring with a health degree. "I enjoy begin here and enjoy being around my teammates. We have a number of players returning on offense so I'm excited for next year and the future of the Houston football program."
Sims led Houston in 2012 with 851 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns to go along with 37 receptions for 373 yards and three TDs. The junior finished third in Conference USA with 94.6 rushing yards per game and third in scoring with 9.3 points per game. Sims accumulated four 100-yard rushing games and one 100-yard receiving game this season.
"We are excited that Charles has decided to return for his senior season. He is a valued member of our program, not just as a player but as a person," said Houston head coach Tony Levine. "Charles is a great role model and displays great character. As a football player, he is what's exciting about college football and will continue to be so in the future in his main contributor role. I am excited with the type of offense we will display in 2013 with Charles leading the way."
Sims leads all active NCAA running backs with 158 career receptions, 29 more than his closest competitor, and is currently 10th on Houston's career receptions chart, the only running back in the top 10.
With Sims in the lineup in 15 of Houston's 24 halves last season, the Cougars scoring per half jumped 5.5 points while rushing yards per half climbed from 205.9 yards to 261.1 yards.
With Sims returning in 2013, Houston returns 1,768 of its 1,814 rushing yards (97.5 percent), 2,964 of its 3,936 passing yards (75.3 percent) and 3,511 of its 3,936 receiving yards (89.3 percent).
