Astros rookie Tyler White wins AL player of the week

White leads AL in batting average, slugging percentage & OPS

HOUSTON – The storybook opening week for Astros rookie Tyler White was capped off by winning the American League player of the week award.

White made his major league debut on opening day in New York by singling in his first at bat and then remaining hot throughout the week.

White finished the six game opening week with 10 hits and three home runs, along with nine runs batted in. He leads the Astros in each of those categories.

The first major league home run came on Friday in the series finale against the Yankees. He followed that with home runs in each of the next two games in Milwaukee.

A former 33rd round draft pick by the Astros in 2013, White made stops with each team in the Astros organization before making the club out of spring training this season.

White is set to play his first game in front of his home fans at Minute Maid Park Monday night in the Astros home opener against the Kansas City Royals.
