Astros avoid arbitration with key players

HOUSTON – The Houston Astros have avoided arbitration with several key players, including 2015 Cy Young award winner Dallas Keuchel.

Keuchel, along with outfielders George Springer and Jake Marisnick, agreed to one-year deal with the team. Reportedly, Keuchel is slated to earn $9.15 million, while Springer will make $3.9 million and Marisnick's deal is worth $1.1 million.

Keuchel was 9-12 in 2016, posting a 4.55 ERA in 26 starts. The previous season when he won the American League Cy Young award, he was 20-8 with a 2.48 ERA.

Springer appeared in all 162 games for the Astros las season and set career highs in at-bats (644), hits (168), doubles (29), triples (5), homers (29), RBI (82) and walks (88).

He tied the franchise record with an American League leading 11 leadoff home runs. Craig Biggio also hit 11 leadoff home runs in 2001.

Marisnick ranked third among AL outfielders with a .995 fielding percentage, while ranking seventh in defensive runs saved. He hit .209 with 18 doubles, five homer runs and 21 RBI.

The deadline for clubs and arbitration-eligible players to exchange filing numbers was Friday at noon CT. Infielder Marwin Gonzalez and right-handed pitchers Will Harris, Mike Fiers and Collin McHugh are the remaining unsigned, arbitration-eligible players on the Astros roster.
