Houston Astros' Jeff Bagwell falls short by 15 votes for 2016 Baseball Hall of Fame class

HOUSTON – Houston Astros great Jeff Bagwell fell short again in his bid for election into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The slugger found out Wednesday evening that he did not receive enough votes to be elected into the Hall. It was Bagwell's sixth year on the ballot and he received 71.6% of the vote. A total of 75 percent of the vote is required in order to get elected.

Bagwell fell short by only 15 votes. Experts believe Bagwell, being so close this year, has a good chance to get enough votes next year.

Catcher Mike Piazza and outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. were the only two inductees to the 2016 Hall of Fame class. Griffey received over 99% of the vote.

Former Astros pitcher Roger Clemens received 45.2% of the vote.

Last year, when Craig Biggio became the first Astros player ever inducted into the Hall, Bagwell received 55.7% of the vote.

Bagwell finished his 15-year career in 2005 with a .297 career batting average, 2,314 hits, 449 home runs and 1,529 RBI. He won the 1991 National League Rookie of the Year award, the 1994 NL Most Valuable Player award and was a four-time All-Star. He also won a Gold Glove in 1994.

His No. 5 jersey was retired by the Astros in 2007.
