HOUSTON -

The Houston Texans have released receiver and returnman Jacoby Jones Tuesday afternoon.

Saturday at the teams post-draft news conference General Manager Rick Smith addressed Jones' future but would not go as far as to say he wouldn't be at camp to compete.

A team official with knowledge of Tuesday's decision to release Jones confirmed the move with KPRC-TV in Houston.

Jones contributed to the Texans over the past 5 years but never lived up to expections even after receiving a new contract.

Last year's key fumble in the playoff loss to the Ravens didn't help his case or the rumblings from the Texans fan base that a change needed to be made before the 2012 season.
