The time has come for UH Coaching legend Guy V. Lewis to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
UH officials are not commenting but KPRC-TV confirmed a report by the Houston Chronicle Thursday
The Official announcement will come Monday at the Final Four in Atlanta.
Lewis, who has had major support in recent years by his former players and coaches across the country still lives in Houston and is now 91 years old.
"I'm real happy , He's in, " said Dena Lewis the wife of Coach Lewis in an interview Thursday afternoon with KPRC Local 2 Sports.
"I think he is very deserving of it, he is modest about it. I cried , and there is alot of emotion with it. It's been a long wait," said Mrs. Lewis.
"We were very happy and Guy is too although he's watching golf on TV this afternoon.. UH is very happy about it. They should be!"
"This was long overdue, and should have happened 20 years ago, " said Reid Gettys in an interview with KPRC-TV Thursday afternoon.
Gettys was one of the star player during the Phi Slamma Jamma era in the 80's.
"He was a great coach and taught us a lot. So happy for he and his family. Monday will be an emotional day," said Gettys.
Lewis not only assembled the Phi Slama Jama teams, he also orchestrated the historic "Game of the Century" between Houston and UCLA at the Astrodome in 1968, the first regular-season game broadcast on national television. The Cougars upset the Bruins before the largest crowd to witness an indoor basketball game at the time.
Lewis also won. Known for plaid jackets and wringing his hands with a red polka-dot towel during games, he guided the Cougars to 27 consecutive winning seasons from 1959-85, was named the national coach of the year twice (1968 and `83) and led Houston to 14 NCAA tournaments and five Final Fours.
Lewis had mostly avoided the public spotlight since retiring in 1986 after 30 seasons coaching the Cougars. He suffered a stroke in February 2002 and had been using a wheelchair in recent years. Dena Lewis says the couple won't travel to Atlanta for the official announcement.
The annual Guy V. Lewis award for High School players will be handed out Friday night in Houston.
