HOUSTON -

The start-up Houston Baptist University football program has signed 22 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, head coach Vic Shealy announced during a press conference on campus Wednesday.

“As a staff, we are amazed at the response as we go out on the road recruiting people and having traction with where we are in our program,” Shealy said. “This is the foundation and the legacy the program is built on. It’s a very athletic, competitive group. We would probably be playing against them somewhere down the road if they had not chosen to come to HBU, because they were a very coveted group among the Southland Conference.”

The Huskies signed five offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, four wide receivers, three linebackers, three defensive backs, two running backs and one quarterback. The combined winning percentage of the class last season was 67 (164-82), including two state championships (Navasota and Cedar Park) and nine district championships.

“Obviously the measureables of this class standout, but what I’m most proud of is their character,” Shealy said. “They are going to be phenomenal on campus, the university will want to support them and get to know them. I hear them speak of their excitement of starting the program and how much they’ve fallen in love with HBU, and that is a great thing for all of us.”
