Kings Begin Shakeup With Ouster Of Taylor

POSTED: Tuesday, April 18, 2006

(Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Kings concluded their third consecutive non-playoff season on Monday and began their offseason moves by firing general manager Dave Taylor on Tuesday.

A Kings Hall of Famer from his playing days, Taylor had been in charge of the club's hockey department since April 22, 1997. The team has not reached the postseason since 2002 and this past season concluded the campaign with a record of 42-35-5 for 89 points -- fourth in the Pacific Division and six points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Taylor has been offered another position within the organization.

"I'm very grateful to Dave and appreciative of his 29 years of service to the Los Angeles Kings," said Kings CEO Tim Leiweke. "He has been loyal to the Kings sweater from Day One and continues to be. We have offered him an opportunity to remain with the organization in a capacity to be determined. That decision is his, and will be dependent on his discussions in the future with our new leadership."

The Kings suffered through an up-and-down season and fired head coach Andy Murray in late March. The team was tied for seventh in the Western Conference when Murray was let go in favor of interim coach John Torchetti, but a string of seven losses in nine games sealed their fate.

It was also announced that Torchetti and the rest of the coaching staff won't be retained.

Taylor spent his entire professional hockey career with the Kings, who made him a 15th-round draft choice in 1975. He played 17 seasons with the Kings, most notably as part of the "Triple Crown Line" with Marcel Dionne and Charlie Simmer, and posted 431 goals and 1,069 points in a franchise-record 1,111 games.

A five-time NHL All-Star, Taylor served as the Kings captain for four seasons (1985-89) and was a member of the LA squad that reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993. On April 3, 1995, Taylor's jersey No. 18 was retired by the organization, joining Dionne (No. 16), Rogie Vachon (No. 30) and Wayne Gretzky (No. 99) as the only Kings to have their sweater retired.

Taylor retired after the 1993-94 season and joined the Kings front office as assistant general manager and player development director before taking over as GM in '97.
