HOUSTON – Nearly 8,000 people who are volunteering to help stage Super Bowl LI gathered Saturday morning at the Toyota Center in Houston for their orientation.

The event was the only time that all of the volunteers would gather at one location before the NFL championship game in the Bayou City on Feb. 5.

Nearly 10,000 volunteers will be used to help staff events not only at the game, but also leading up to the game.

"Volunteers are a critical part of our plan to create an unparalleled Super Bowl experience for everyone who comes to celebrate with us," Host Committee President and CEO Sallie Sargent said. "This orientation gives us the opportunity to provide the volunteers with the instruction on how to make that positive connection with people coming to enjoy the Super Bowl LI festivities."

The volunteers were selected after the host committee conducted more than 10,000 face-to-face interviews during a three-month process.

Among the speakers at the orientation were Olympic gold-medalist Steven Lopez.
