MLS' 1836 Name Upsets Houston's Hispanic Community

City's Founding Year Was Also When Texas Won Independence From Mexico

HOUSTON -- Houston 1836 might soon be known as the name that went down in flames three weeks after Major League Soccer made the announcement.

Comments from Houston's Hispanic community are causing the soccer club to rethink the name of the city's newest sports team.

The team's name refers to the founding of Houston, but it is also the same year Texas defeated Mexico in the Battle of San Jacinto and won its independence.

Mustangs, Apollos, and Long Star are among the new names being considered.
