American League
Angels 7, Twins 6
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Garret Anderson's three-run homer in the seventh inning lifted the LA Angels of Anaheim to a 7-6 win over the Minnesota Twins in the finale of a three-game series at Angel Stadium. Anderson, who finished 2-for-4, also threw out the potential tying run in the eighth inning, as the Angels won the final two games of this set to escape with the series victory. Vladimir Guerrero added three hits, an RBI and two runs scored for the Angels, who have won five of six and moved a season-high 20 games over .500 (52-32). Mike Redmond had a homer, ending 4-for-4 with three RBI for the Twins, who have dropped two straight since their four-game winning streak.

White Sox 7, Devil Rays 2
CHICAGO -- Frank Thomas belted a three-run homer for a second straight night, and the Chicago White Sox beat Tampa Bay, 7-2, to complete a three-game sweep at U.S. Cellular Field. Carl Everett had three hits and an RBI for the White Sox, who pushed their lead to 10 1/2 games over Minnesota in the AL Central. Chicago has won seven of its last nine contests. Scott Podsednik, who won the final vote in All-Star balloting on Wednesday, had two hits and scored twice for the White Sox. Aubrey Huff and Jorge Cantu homered for Tampa Bay, which tied a season-high with its eighth consecutive defeat.

Tigers 7, Indians 3
CLEVELAND -- Chris Shelton and Magglio Ordonez each drove in a pair of runs, Jeremy Bonderman threw eight strong innings, and the Detroit Tigers quieted the Cleveland Indians, 7-3, to split a four-game set at Jacobs Field. Bonderman (11-5) allowed two runs on just five hits while striking out five for Detroit, which has won two in a row after a four-game skid. Bonderman became the first Tigers pitcher to record 11 wins prior to the All- Star break since Bill Gullickson won 11 games in 1991. Travis Hafner had two hits, including a homer, and Jhonny Peralta finished 2-for-4 with an RBI to highlight the offense for Cleveland, which has dropped two in a row after winning nine of 11.

Blue Jays 8, Athletics 0
TORONTO -- Ted Lilly threw seven shutout innings and Vernon Wells went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer as Toronto blanked Oakland, 8-0, in the second of a three-game series at the Rogers Centre. Frank Menechino finished 3-for-3 and scored twice in the triumph, the Blue Jays' fifth in seven games, while Russ Adams added two hits, including an RBI single, to help Toronto stop Joe Blanton's four-game win streak. Lilly (7-8) reeled off his second consecutive winning start by allowing just six hits and two walks while striking out five. Jason Kendall ended 2-for-4 for the Athletics, who fell for only the second time in 12 outings.

Red Sox 7, Rangers 4
ARLINGTON, Texas -- David Ortiz homered and drove in three runs and Matt Clement worked 8 2/3 solid innings to lead Boston over Texas, 7-4, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Ameriquest Field. Clement (10-2) yielded four runs on nine hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out nine. Kevin Millar and Jason Varitek each drove in two runs for the Red Sox, who won for third time in five games. Johnny Damon finished 1-for-4 and extended his career-high hitting streak to 22 games. David Dellucci belted a pair of home runs and finished with three RBI for the Rangers, who lost for the third time in four tries.

Ichiro Suzuki drove in the only run for the Mariners, who had a two-game winning streak snapped and have lost nine of their last 11.

National League
Mets 5, Nationals 3
Ramon Castro and Marlon Anderson each drove in a pair of runs to lead the New York Mets over the Washington Nationals, 5-3, at RFK Stadium. Anderson finished 2-for-3 and Castro went 2-for-4 for New York, which has taken two of the first three contests in this four-game set. Mike Cameron added a solo homer for the Mets, who finally handed Washington starter Livan Hernandez a loss. Hernandez (12-3) saw his personal winning streak end at a career-high 11 straight decisions. The righthander threw into the eighth and was charged with five runs on eight hits. It was his first setback since April 19, a span of 14 starts. Brad Wilkerson ended 2- for-4 with two RBI for Washington, which has lost just three of its last 13 games.

Marlins 5, Brewers 4
MIAMI -- Juan Encarnacion stroked an RBI single in the 12th inning and Florida pitching retired the final 28 batters it faced, as the Marlins rallied to post a 5-4 win over Milwaukee in the third contest of a four-game set at Dolphins Stadium. Encarnacion ended 3-for-6 and also scored the game-tying run for Florida, which overcame a 4-1 deficit by not allowing a baserunner from the third inning on. Juan Pierre, Miguel Cabrera and Alex Gonzalez all contributed a pair of hits for the Marlins, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Geoff Jenkins drove in two runs for Milwaukee, which lost for only the second time in its last seven games.

Phillies 5, Pirates 0
PITTSBURGH -- Vicente Padilla threw six shutout innings to snap a three-start losing streak and lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the third contest of a four-game set from PNC Park. The Phillies mustered just six hits, but received a solid game from Padilla and relievers Ryan Madson, Ugueth Urbina and Billy Wagner. Philadelphia has won the two of the first three contests of this series, but has just five victories in its last 17 games. Matt Lawton had two of the five hits for Pittsburgh, which has dropped seven of its last nine contests. The Bucs have not won back-to-back games since June 10-11, the end of a four-game winning streak.

Astros 5, Padres 4
HOUSTON -- Willy Taveras went 3-for-5 and Houston held off a late San Diego rally to post a 5-4 decision over the Padres at Minute Maid Park. The victory, the Astros' seventh in eighth games, could be a costly one. Andy Pettitte allowed just one run to win his third consecutive decision, but left the game after five innings due to tightness in his left elbow. Jason Lane and Adam Everett each collected two hits for Houston, which has taken the first three of this four-game series and won for the 12th time in its last 13 home games. Pettitte (6-7), whose troublesome elbow limited him to 15 starts in 2004 and required surgery last August, gave up just three hits and one walk before exiting after 60 pitches. Robert Fick finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Padres, who lost for the third straight game.

Dodgers 9, Rockies 5
DENVER -- Jason Phillips and Antonio Perez each had a three-run homer for Los Angeles, as the Dodgers defeated Colorado, 9-5, in the third portion of a four-game set at Coors Field. Brad Penny (5-5) earned the win, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on nine hits, mixing in three walks and five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Perez finished with five RBI for the Dodgers, who have taken two of the first three games of this four-game set. Cory Sullivan had three hits and knocked in two runs for the Rockies, who have lost three of four.

Cardinals 2, Diamondbacks 1

Carpenter (13-4), who was named as a member of the All-Star team and could end up being the National League's starter, has won five straight starts. The righthander surrendered just one run on three hits over eight masterful innings while striking out seven and walking two. Jim Edmonds hit a solo homer for the Cardinals, who have won four straight games. Vazquez (7-8) suffered the tough-luck loss as he was touched for only two runs on three hits over nine superb innings. Alex Cintron hit a solo homer for the Diamondbacks, who lost for only the third time in their past nine games.
