Top pick Brian Cushing ( aka: Cowboy Cush according to WR David Anderson ) signed his contract Saturday night and was on the field for his first workout Sunday morning and spoke with the media for the first time about being signed, sealed and delivered.

Cushing on being at camp, " I am really happyand relieved to get it done and out of the way. Its time to play football now and help the team win.

Cushing on missing 2 days, " It was tough to not be here and away in California. I had tried to workout with the other rookies but because of legalities I couldn't stay at the facility. It helped alot to be here for OTA's and Mini-camp so I'm ready to jump right in . "

Kubiak on Cushing, " He stepped right in. There's no doubt he's a pro in how he carries himself out there. Glad he's here."

STRAP ON THE PADS

After two days the shoulder pads went on Sunday for the first time. It was obvious these guys are ready to hit. Several jumped the gun a bit with a few light licks in the morning practice. Typical of camp, but they'll have to wait until the Chiefs game besides a few more against each other. Coaches don't want injuries and don't want to take chances. 1 on 1 defensive drills have the most contact out here.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Several good passes and catches.. Best catch of the morning practice was by defensive back A.J. Davis, a free agent out of North Carolina State. Davis played well on several snaps but his interception on a ball thrown by Dan Orlovsky was the best . Davis had tight coverage then cut back in for the one handed pick as he sprinted off the sidelines. Coaches liked it and it earned Davis a few fist pounds and head slaps from his teammates.

WHERE'S MY SPACE? 2nd round pick Connor Barwin , in an interview with KPRC Local 2 Sports, said that he has been assigned to room with Top Pick Brian Cushing. Now that Cushing is signed and in camp, Barwin now no longer has his own hotel room.

" Yea'll, now that Cush is here I have company," Barwin told KPRC Sunday. " We roomed at mini-camp and he left a lot of dirty laundry so we'll have to take care of that!"

Barwin has turned in three great days to start camp. Sunday he had a knockdown and an interception in team drills. The Coaches are taking notice and impressed.

"I'm getting more comfortable each time out, " Barwin told KPRC Sunday. " I'm trying to use my quickness out there and soak in as much as possible to help the team"

QUOTE OF THE DAY

New Defensive End Antonio Smith hung around well after practice to mix with the fans and sign autographs. With the media herd long gone, KPRC Local 2 stuck around to hang with Smith.

Smith on camp, " Man it is hot and humid here. I mean, they didn't tell me about this! I was in Arizona but this is crazy stuff. An hour in and I was feeling it."

TEXANS CAMP COVERAGE ON SPORTS SUNDAY TONIGHT at 10:30pm on KPRC Local 2: At home with Eric and Jenny Winston, Adam Clanton reports on Cushing-Barwin impact, Mr. Versatile James Casey, Matt Schaub on pressure in 3rd season, and Owner Bob Mcnair on his state of the franchise.
