Houston's Artest Makes Return To Sacramento

(Sports Network) - Ron Artest returns to Sacramento for the first time since being dealt in the offseason tonight as the Houston Rockets take their quest to secure home-court advantage in the first round of the NBA playoffs to ARCO Arena.

The Rockets, who are opening up a two-game road trip tonight, are currently deadlocked with San Antonio atop the Southwest Division with just four games to play.

Most recently, Houston picked up a big win in south Texas over a talented Orlando Magic club on Tuesday. Yao Ming won the battle of the All-Star centers in that one, outdueling Dwight Howard with 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Rockets to a 93-83 victory over the Magic.

Artest and Von Wafer netted 16 and 14 points, respectively, with Artest adding seven assists and six rebounds for Houston, which is also tied with Portland for the fourth seed in the Western Conference.

Luis Scola chipped in 12 points and nine boards, helping Yao contain Howard for most of the contest in the Rockets' second straight win.

Houston also reached the 50-win plateau for the third consecutive season thanks in large part to Artest, who has come up huge since star swingman Tracy McGrady was lost for the season after microfracture knee surgery.

The Rockets are an impressive 19-7 since losing McGrady and Artest is averaging over 19 points per game during that stretch.

Houston, which has lost three straight on the road and is 18-20 as the visitor this season, will close its quick trek in Oakland against Golden State on Friday.

The Kings, meanwhile, dropped their fifth straight game on Tuesday when Pau Gasol posted 26 points and 12 rebounds, and Kobe Bryant added 22 points, as the Los Angeles Lakers inched closer to owning the best record in the NBA with a 122-104 drubbing Sacramento at ARCO Arena.

The lowly Kings were paced by Spencer Hawes, who scored 21 points and grabbed 15 boards. Francisco Garcia ended with 19 points for Sacramento, which is a dismal 11-28 at home and an NBA-worst 16-61 overall.

Rookie Jason Thompson added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Sacramento.

The Rockets swept a pair of games against the Kings in Houston this season.
