The city of Houston officially welcomed back its local Olympic champions Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The noon ceremony on the steps of Houston City Hall, 901 Bagby, honored 26 Houston-area Olympic competitors and their coaches.

Mayor Bill White gave out proclamations to the athletes and coaches declaring Tuesday as Houston Olympic Heroes Day.

Athletes from the Houston area represented the U.S. at the Beijing games in men's gymnastics, diving, soccer, basketball, tennis, taekwondo, shooting, sailing and track and field.

The University of Houston band and cheerleaders performed at the city hall ceremony.

Many of the athletes said they were honored to represent their country and Houston.
