Phelps Collects First Gold; Sets New Record

American Lochte Takes Bronze

Michael Phelps on Saturday won the men's 400 individual medley gold medal in a world-record time of 4 minutes, 3.84 seconds.

With President George W. Bush, first lady Laura Bush and daughter, Barbara, looking on, the American swimming phenom ran away from the rest of the pool of swimmers.

Ryan Lochte took the bronze for the U.S. team. Laszlo Cseh, of Hungary, rallied to take the silver medal in 4:06.16, while Lochte came in at 4:08.09.

"I'm kind of emotional now, after the first one," Phelps told NBC after he climbed out of the water.

Michael Phelps hopes to win eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, and he's already provided a tantalizing glimpse of what might be coming. His time in the qualifying round of the 400-meter individual medley was 4 minutes, 7.82 seconds for a new Olympic record. That was better than his gold medal winning time at the Athens Games. It was also almost a second and a-half better than anyone else in the heats.
