Former Olympic champion Dominique Moceanu says gymnastics has "a dark side."
In an interview that airs Tuesday on HBO's "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel," the member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic gold-medal squad said many athletes and administrators hope that Moceanu's former coach, Martha Karolyi, will be removed from her leadership role in USA Gymnastics, The Houston Chronicle Reported.
Karolyi is the national team coordinator for the U.S. women's gymnastics team.
According to the Chronicle, Moceanu described the diet restrictions she had to follow and the physical toll the sport took on her petite body. Moceanu told HBO one way to change the sport would be to remove Karolyi, and her husband, Bela Karolyi, from their roles. Bela, a former coach who trained the likes of Nadia Comaneci, Kim Zmeskal and Moceanu, runs the national training center.
Moceanu has been at odds with USA Gymnastics since 2006, when she lost her petition to compete at the national championships.
Moceanu, who was the youngest member of the 1996 "Magnificent Seven" team that won gold at the Atlanta Games, now lives in Cleveland with her husband and their infant daughter. According to the Chronicle, the former gymnast said unless the system changes, she would not encourage her daughter to compete in gymnastics.
