OMAHA, Neb. -- Michael Phelps just missed setting another world record at the U.S. Olympic trials.
Even though it wasn't Ryan Lochte vs. Michael Phelps Part III, it was still a nail biter, with Phelps coming just short of his record time. He still made the best time in the 200m freestyle trial at 1.44.10 -- his world record is 1.43.86. He also qualified for the finals in the 200m butterfly.
Lochte dropped out of the 200m freestyle final at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials Tuesday to instead focus on the 100m backstroke final.
The extra focus couldn't, however, pave his way to Beijing. Lochte placed third behind Matt Grevers and Aaron Perisol, who beat his own world record with a time of 52.89.
Lochte had the top qualifying time in the 200m freestyle, an event in which Phelps owns the world record. Phelps had the second-fastest time in Monday's qualifying heats.
Phelps bested Lochte on Sunday, the opening day of trials, in the 400m individual medley. Phelps finished first en route to breaking his own world record, while Lochte was a close second.
Lochte has yet to officially make the Olympic team, although he is likely on it after finishing second to the eight-time Olympic medalist on Sunday.
As for the women's team, Natalie Coughlin will appear at the Olympics after winning in the 100m backstroke with a time of 58.97, breaking the old world record of 59.03.
Both of Tuesday's world record breakers were wearing the Speedo LZR Racer, which upped its tally of world marks to 44 since debuting in mid-February. Their records bring the total for the meet to six, with five days to go.
