Singer Acknowledges Affair With Clemens

Singer Says Relationship Wasn't Sexual Until Later

Country music singer Mindy McCready confirmed Monday that she had a long-term affair with pitcher Roger Clemens, the New York Daily News reported.

"I cannot refute anything in the story," McCready told the Daily News, which broke the story at midnight Sunday.

The Daily News reported that McCready and Clemens, who is under investigation for perjury after he told Congress and federal officials he never used performance-enhancing drugs, met in a karaoke bar when the singer was 15 and Clemens was a 28-year-old married father of two. At the time Clemens was playing for the Red Sox and was at the Florida bar with his teammates, according to the newspaper.

McCready read a prepared statement Monday.

"Yes, I have known Roger Clemens for a long time," McCready said, according to the Daily News. "He's a kind and caring man. He's also a legendary athlete. The central topic in the debate, however, regards his professional life, not his personal life.

"There are legal matters working their way through the system that have nothing to do with me. From my point of view, that is where the focus should remain."

The Daily News reported that after their first meeting at the Fort Myers, Fla., bar, Clemens took the teenage McCready to his hotel room, but sources told the newspaper that the two did not have sex. It wasn't until later, after McCready had become a country star and moved to Nashville, that the relationship became sexual, according to the newspaper.

Clemens' lawyer released a statement Monday saying that the seven-time Cy Young Award winner was a longtime friend of McCready's, but that the two did not have a sexual relationship.

Allegations of the affair are expected to have an impact on Clemens' defamation lawsuit against his former trainer, Brian McNamee. Clemens said that McNamee ruined his reputation when he claimed to have injected the pitcher with performance-enhancing drugs. Clemens has repeatedly denied ever having taken steroids.

"I have no doubt that Roger has excellent legal representation and he will emerge from this a strong person and a revered athlete," McCready told the Daily News. "I wish him and his family the best."
