Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1 to 14.
In Texas, an average of 70 children drown each year. For every child who drowns, an estimated 4 additional children are hospitalized and 14 children visit emergency departments due to submersion injuries.
Building on a foundation of more than 100 years of swim instruction, the YMCA has established the YMCA Water Wise water safety initiative. This initiative has the aggressive goal of eliminating drownings through water safety education and awareness, and by teaching swimming skills.
