HOUSTON -- An 8-year-old girl has made a name for herself in the goat-raising community.
Kelli Murphy can't even count how many trophies she owns. Goats are her passion and showing them off has won her more than ribbons and belt buckles.
"She's probably already earned $5,000 or $6,000 to put in the bank for college," said Kelli's dad, Clint.
Kelli started competing in goat shows three years ago. Her parents used to compete and when Kelli was 5 years old, she told them she was ready.
"She goes, 'I can start beating some of those bigger kids, daddy,'" Clint Murphy said.
Goat shows are kind of like beauty pageants for goats. Judges look at the animal's shape, size and overall appearance.
"The competition among the kids, of course, is pretty strong," judge Jeff Klein said.
Competitors can also win points in a showmanship category. How a breeder picks, feeds and trains a goat pays off in the arena.
How does Kelli keep winning?
"I just practice," she said.
Kelli is a straight-A student and already knows what she wants to be when she grows up.
"An archaeologist," she said.
