Republican Gov. Sarah Palin and Democratic U. S. Sen. Joe Biden will face off Thursday in the one and only debate featuring the vice presidential candidates.

Rice University political communications expert Jeremy Grace said people are interested because, "I think everybody's slowing down tonight to see the train wreck. I don't think that's why we should be watching the debate, but I think that's' why we're all interested."

Grace said that the stakes are high for both candidates.

"Joe Biden has to show up and be thoughtful, respectful, answer the questions and he wins. Sarah Palin has to prove she's worthy of being a heartbeat away from presidency and give direct answers to questions."

Meanwhile, debate viewing parties will be held all over town as Democrats, Republicans and independents gather to watch.

"I expect her to do very well. She's a well spoken woman, defined on the issues, and I believe what she stands for," says Moriah Guthrie.

But other Houstonians were not as confident in Palin's ability to remain composed on the stage.

"She's really out of her league," said Cheryl Valdes, who supports Biden. "I think she's a pretty decent human being, she's just not ready to be vice president."
