NHL Game Summary - Calgary At Columbus

POSTED: Saturday, November 4, 2006

(Sports Network) - Manny Malhotra's goal in the 11th round of the shootout was the game winner, sending the Columbus Blue Jackets over the Calgary Flames, 5-4, at Nationwide Arena.

After Pascal Leclaire stopped Chuck Kobasew's shot, Malhotra skated in with a full head of steam and sent a wrister through the pads of Flames' goaltender Jamie McLennan from 15 feet to end the extra round.

"It was a great way to win the hockey game," said Blue Jackets' head coach Gerard Gallant. "We just have to get our game together for a full 60 minutes."

David Vyborny scored twice, Sergei Fedorov notched a goal and an assist and Leclaire made 28 saves for the Blue Jackets, who won for just the second time in eight games.

Jarome Iginla registered a goal and a helper, and Daymond Langkow had a goal and two assists. Roman Hamrlik collected two assists, and McLennan stopped 33 shots for Calgary, which has lost four in a row.

All three Columbus goals in the opening period occurred on the man advantage.

Fedorov got things going at 3:05, when he tapped in the rebound of a Nikolai Zherdev shot at the left of the crease. Zherdev did all the work on the play, moving through two Calgary defenders on the way to firing the initial shot.

Iginla scored at 15:21 shorthanded, as he broke in with a defenseman hanging on his back, and put a weak shot between Leclaire's pads.

Columbus went ahead 2-1 just 22 seconds later. Duvie Westcott's floater from the right point found its way past a screened McLennan, who never moved until the shot was behind him.

Vyborny rifled a slapper to the short side with the Flames two men down to make it 3-1 at the 17:32 mark.

"We were practicing the power play last week really hard," said Vyborny. "Finally, we show up in the game."

Despite the two-goal deficit, Calgary battled back to tie the game. Just 19 seconds into the second, Langkow ripped home the rebound of an Iginla shot to cut the Blue Jacket lead to 3-2. Then, 2:44 into the third, Alex Tanguay was in the right place at the right time to put in the rebound of a Tony Amonte stuffer from behind the net.

Calgary's first lead of the night came at the 7:18 mark on the power play. Phaneuf unloaded a slapper from the point which ticked off players in the slot and changed speed enough to fool Leclaire, who had gone down to prevent a low shot.

Five and a half minutes later, the Jackets made it 4-4, when Vyborny somehow snuck a sharp angle shot between McLennan and the post. From that point, despite numerous chances at both ends, neither team could break the deadlock until the shootout.

Game Notes:

Calgary has won four of its last six games in Columbus...Iginla has 22 points in 21 career games against the Blue Jackets...Columbus was 4-of-9 with the extra man, while Calgary was just 1-of-5...The four power-play goals tied a team record.
