Alexander The Great: Seahawks Rally To Beat Packers

POSTED: Monday, November 27, 2006

(Sports Network) - Matt Hasselbeck threw three touchdown passes and Shaun Alexander ran for a season-high 201 yards on a franchise-record 40 carries to lead the Seattle Seahawks over the Green Bay Packers, 34-24, at a snowy Qwest Field.

Hasselbeck finished 17-of-36 for 157 yards for the Seahawks (7-4), who overcame a nine-point third-quarter deficit and four turnovers to win for the third time in four outings. Hasselbeck converted all of his touchdowns in the second half, after throwing three interceptions and losing one fumble in the 30 minutes.

"He was a little rusty," said Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren of Hasselbeck, who made his return after missing the last four games with a sprained right knee.

D.J. Hackett, Darrell Jackson and Jerramy Stevens all caught touchdown passes for Seattle, which moved two games ahead of the San Francisco 49ers for the top spot in the NFC West.

Alexander nearly doubled his rushing yardage total coming into the game. In four games prior, the reigning league MVP had just 224 yards. He had missed six games with a broken foot.

"That was not the plan coming into the game," said Holmgren, who ended a three-game slide against his former club, of getting the ball into Alexander's hands so much. "I wanted to be more balanced...but things were happening so I took the ball out of Matt's hands a bit."

Brett Favre ended 22-of-36 for 266 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions for the Packers (4-7), who have dropped two straight. Ahman Green ran for 44 yards and a score and Donald Driver had 82 yards and a TD receiving.

Down 21-12 the Seahawks began to mount a comeback midway through the third quarter. Hasselbeck led Seattle 63 yards on nine plays, capping the drive with a 23-yard pass to Hackett to draw the Seahawks within 21-19 with 6:19 left until the fourth.

Then, after holding the Packers offense, Seattle embarked on a methodical 10- play, 77-yard go-ahead touchdown drive that took nearly 5 1/2 minutes and bridged the third and fourth quarters. Alexander ran for 42 yards on the march, which was capped by a four-yard TD pass from Hasselbeck to Jackson. The ensuing two-point conversion was successful and Seattle led 27-21 with just over 14 minutes left in the game.

Green Bay answered with a 34-yard field goal by Dave Rayner to make it a 27-24 game with 10:50 remaining.

However, Seattle scored again on its ensuing possession when Hasselbeck found Stevens in the back of the end zone with 6:13 left for a 10-point lead. The play ended an 11-play, 51-yard drive that featured a fourth-down conversion by Seattle and a questionable roughing the passer penalty against the Packers' Cullen Jenkins on a third down pass that went incomplete.

Favre was picked off on Green Bay's next two possessions and he lost a fumble on the final play of the game.

Seattle's woes started at the beginning. On the Seahawks' second play from scrimmage, Hasselbeck's pass intended for Stevens was deflected at the line by Ryan Pickett and intercepted by Charles Woodson at the Seattle 36.

Four plays later, Green ran in from five yards out to give the Packers the early lead.

The Seahawks responded with three straight Josh Brown field goals. He capped an 11-play, 45-yard drive with a 45-yard field goal to draw Seattle within 7-3 with 3:35 to play in the first. His 41-yarder at the 8:36 mark made it a 7-6 contest and his 37-yarder 5:02 later gave Seattle the lead, 9-7.

With just under two minutes to play in the half, Hasselbeck dropped back to pass and had the ball knocked from his hands by Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. Abdul Hodge caught the loose ball before it had a chance to hit the ground and ran 29 yards for a 14-9 lead with 1:51 to play until halftime.

Seattle did respond to get three more points before the break, as Brown hit a 28-yarder with 23 seconds left to send the Seahawks into halftime down 14-12.

Green Bay, though, went ahead by nine points early in the third quarter when Driver caught a short Favre pass and ran into the end zone from 48 yards outs. The play was just the fifth of a 72-yard drive that gave the Packers a 21-12 lead with just 2:21 elapsed in the half.

"We had a number of opportunities that we didn't take care of," said Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy.

"I felt our defense, especially early, gave us a bunch of opportunities over and over again."

Game Notes

There was a steady snowfall from prior to game time through the first half. The second half was played without any snow...Alexander's rushing attempts were an NFL high for the season. It was also his second career 200-yard rushing game...Woodson ended with two interceptions...Green had 46 yards receiving.
