Elena Marks is the president and CEO of the Episcopal Health Foundation and says some of what’s being proposed would be devastating for many
“They have reduced the costs associated with the Affordable Care Act, but they are doing so at the expense of what the Congressional Budget Office says is 28 million Americans who will become uninsured as a result of those changes," said Marks.
She said there are solutions, and when asked what she would tell those making the decisions, said, ”I would tell them that healthcare in this country is very expensive, and if we want everyone to have access to healthcare, we’ve got to acknowledge that it’s very expensive and then we’ve got to figure out how to do it in the most cost-effective and efficient way.” Much more with Elena Marks on this week’s Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall.

“It’s a practice, I think, that people are familiar with, but not sure how to do it,” she said. “So when you get teaching artists in there and teachers start to notice the changes in their students, they start to notice that their test scores are going up, they’re going, 'How do I learn how to do this?'”

Marlon Mitchell is president and CEO of Houston Business Development Inc., and for more than 30 years, he has been working to provide business opportunities for small and minority businesses in Houston.
“It’s one thing to give them access to capital, which we can do, we can make loans anywhere $5,000 up to $5 million,” he said. “But if you give somebody access to capital, but they don’t have the management capacity to run that business successfully, then it’s all for naught.”
