HOUSTON - Jim Gast has written what he says is the definitive story of the creation and building of the Houston Astrodome. "The Astrodome: Building an American Spectacle" takes the reader on a journey from the back rooms where the talk of a dome first began, to the design, building and opening of what became known as the 8th Wonder of the World.
Gast is a guest on Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall and talks about how the idea for the book came about, the surprising facts discovered while writing it, and his thoughts about what should happen to "the biggest room in the world.
The YMCA of Greater Houston and H-E-B are teaming up for operation Backpack with the goal of collecting 75,000 backpacks for children across Southeast Texas prior to Sunday August 10th. Jamie Clark, Chaplain of the YMCA of Greater Houston tells why the YMCA takes the lead on this tremendous project now in its 10th year. Lacey Dalcour Salas is from H-E-B and says it's very easy for anyone to contribute by donating at check out stands.
"People can use our tear pads when they check out or can pay for a pre-packed backpack right there in the store," she said.
Bernard and Shirley Kinsey have spent most of their adult lives collecting African American artifacts and Art. The African American Treasures of the Kinsey Collection will be on display at the Houston Museum of African American Culture from Sunday August 3 until Sunday October 26. The Kinsey's are joined by Wells Fargo Senior Vice President Cary Yates to talk about this one of kind display that is making its first ever stop in Houston.
