Sentencing Phase Under Way

UPDATED: 5:09 pm CDT May 18, 2006

A pastor was found guilty Thursday of setting his own church on fire, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Pastor Roger Marcus was charged with two felony counts of first-degree arson and first-degree insurance fraud.

Investigators said Marcus hired Quinton Fontenette to set fire at the Blessed Again Ministries, located at 14135 East Freeway, on April 19, 2005.

Marcus shut down the church's surveillance cameras the week before the fire, according to authorities.

Investigators said the church was not doing well and Marcus planned the fire to collect on a new insurance policy.

The blaze caused more than $1 million worth of damage.

The sentencing phase began Thursday afternoon.
