Young girl killed in crash

HOUSTON – A young girl was killed in a crash in southeast Houston on Friday.

Houston police said the wreck happened in the westbound lanes on the South Loop near Telephone Road about 2:30 p.m.

Investigators said the driver was likely speeding and lost control. The vehicle went onto a grassy shoulder and the driver overcorrected, causing the SUV to flip over, police said.

The girl, believed to be about three years old, was thrown out of the car. She died at the scene.

Detectives said they have not determined if she was in a car seat at the time of the crash.

The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was rushed to a hospital. His condition was not released.

Officials have not said how the girl and driver were related.

Police said alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
