YMCA 'Holiday Giving' event provides help for families during holidays

HOUSTON – The line stretched through Tom Wussow Park at the start of the Aldine-Greenspoint YMCA "Holiday Giving" event.

Towards the front was Karina Pardo and her kids Susan and Erik.

“The YMCA always have great events and when they all get together it’s good, I think, for families,” said Karina.

By just showing up her family was able to get valuable information from Texas Children's Hospital, a plush toy from the Houston Police Department and a load of fresh produce from the Houston Food Bank just in time for those holiday gatherings.

“It’s just time to share and it’s good for families because everybody get in the kitchen and cook and you know it’s a good time,” said Karina.

Though this is just one event in Houston it's actually a part of a nationwide effort.

“Here at Today we are launching our second annual Share Kindness campaign.

So together with our sponsor the Y, we’ll be shining a spotlight on stories of empathy and generosity throughout the month,” announced the "Today Show's" Tamron Hall on Nov. 28.

Through that campaign NBC is hoping to inspire one million acts of kindness.

“The YMCA has committed to 10,000 of those acts and we are one of those acts here,” said Aldine-Greenspoint YMCA Associate Executive Director Claudia Sanchez.

Of her YMCA's "act" Claudia said her favorite part had to be toy distribution.

“You are able to see the smile on the kids' faces, you are able to see families tell you thank you,” said Claudia.

“I just want to say thank you for this program. Just very grateful to see that they like to share and that they like to us to come here and have a benefit of everything they do,” said Karina.

If you want to be a part of the Today Show's one-million acts of kindness then make sure to share your own stories on social media with the hashtag #ShareKindness.
