HOUSTON – You could call it the highway to high fashion. Two Houston-area women are hitting the streets with mobile fashion trucks featuring shoes and unique clothing.
Shawn Bassett owns Stiletto Steppin. She is a mom and grandmother who loves fashion and had a big dream.
"We are heels on wheels. We come out to you," Bassett explained.
She showed KPRC Local 2 some of her high heels for sale. Many of her shoes are fun and pretty tall. She has a pair she calls her "Lady Gagas."
Other shoes are more classic.
"I also carry flats for the conservative women. Flats, no heels on them, flats," she explained.
Many of her clients, including Victoria McClain, are repeat, long-time customers.
"Oh, I've been a customer of hers for a very long time. I don't want to put any years on it right now, but we've been together for quite a while," McClain said.
Bassett said launching the mobile shoe truck was a long-time dream.
"I had a vision and my vision was heels on wheels -- bring the shoes to the women. I Googled it and didn't see it. I am the first one in Houston with this concept, heels on wheels."
The trend of mobile fashion seems to be growing.
Kim Cushingberry has been traveling around town selling her goods for about five months in her truck called Trunk Show Mobile Boutique.
"It's a food truck concept with fashions inside. We are a mobile boutique, a boutique on wheels," Cushingberry explained.
She has clothing, accessories and handbags. She also rents her truck out to local designers. She says having a store on wheels has its perks.
"As I drive down the street, I get honks. One time I actually stopped to get gas and people have bought things while I'm at the gas station," she said.
Cushingberry calls her fashion "urban trendy." She said she he prides herself with carrying unique items in a unique setting.
