HOUSTON – Houston homicide investigators were trying to determine the identity of a woman whose body was found near an abandoned environmental services cleanup business.
Officers were called out to a dead-end road in the 5900 block of Wayland in southeast Houston after receiving a tip that there was a body in the area.
"It was a tip that said come out here and you'll find this body," says Sgt. Matthew Brady, HPD homicide.
When officers arrived around 11 p.m. Tuesday, they found a woman, who appeared to be in her 30s, near the abandoned building.
According to officers, the victim hadn't been at the location for very long.
"The cause of death is unknown at this time. We can't tell if it's blunt force trauma or gunshot wounds," says Brady.
Nearly five years ago, Houston police, state and federal agents shut down the chemical plant.
Neighbors say the facility has now become an illegal dumping ground that breeds thieves and vandals.
Now officers are trying to find the person who called in with the tip.
"We have a person of interest we'll be speaking to shortly and that's all I can say about that at this time," says Brady.
Investigators believed the woman could be connected to a missing person case that was reported to police Tuesday afternoon.
