WALLER COUNTY, Texas - A woman in Waller County is heartbroken after she says someone shot and killed her dog and she's taking a proactive approach to find the killer.
Animals are Tara Dahnke's passion and profession. The Waller County horse trainer lives on a small ranch near Fields Store with her mother Pat, their horses, a couple of feral barn cats and the family dogs.
On Jan. 23, the day of the big freeze, someone shot her beloved mutt Bodie in broad daylight. Tara came out of her house and found Bodie's body about four feet from a pasture fence. Someone shot her from the road.
"We weren't able to help her, be with her. She was scared to death of gunshots so I hate that she had to die in that manner," Dahnke said.
Dahnke's initial grief turned to anger. She posted the news to her Facebook page, and raised the ire of other animal lovers across the country.
"I was just amazed at the tremendous response from all over the country and the world and people started saying they wanted to donate to start a reward," Dahnke said.
So Dahnke decided to crowd-source a reward to bring Bodie's killer to justice. She set up a page on the website, gofundme.com.
In a week's time, she's raised more than $4,500 in donations to go toward a reward.
"We have over $3,700 on that fund plus what neighbors have donated. So we're up to $4,000 that we have gathered up, and then Crime Stoppers donated another $500. If nothing else it will deter them from doing it again, and hopefully they're shaking in their boots," said Dahnke.
She knows it won't bring Bodie back, but she hopes catching the killer might give some purpose to her dog's senseless death and her family's grief.
"I can't understand how some one could do this and obviously that did it for sport. Just to be cruel or to prove to somebody they could do something like that. I don't understand and I want to know why," Dahnke said.
The Waller County Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting, but at this point investigators don't have any leads. They're hoping the reward Dahnke is raising will help.
